Hough 'mortified over Cheryl's illness'

Derek Hough is shocked and devastated by the news that Cheryl Cole has been struck down with malaria, a report has claimed.

According to The Mirror, Hough is blaming himself for Cole's current state because she is understood to have contracted her illness during their recent holiday in Tanzania, which he organised as a surprise treat.

A source told the newspaper: "He's mortified by what's happened and is utterly devastated at what she's going through - not least because it happened on a trip he'd planned."

The insider added: "It's such a shame as she had such a lovely holiday with Derek and has such lovely memories of it. He is worried sick about her. He's sticking close by her bedside and trying to keep her cheerful. He's probably the best tonic she's got right now."

A number of recent reports have suggested that Cole and Hough are an item. They are said to have started dating in the aftermath of Cheryl's split from footballer husband Ashley.

Cole's representatives have confirmed that she has cancelled all work commitments this week on doctors' orders. She is thought to be receiving treatment at London's Cromwell hospital.
