The Golden Globe-winning actress wrote in The Huffington Post that the public should be inspired by the union of different countries in South Africa and reject the intolerance and racially offensive language exhibited by Gibson in a taped attack on a former girlfriend, which was released on Friday.
"The World Cup, in all its global glory, reminds us each day: say no to racism. This week, a movie icon reminds us that racism is up and running (off at the mouth) and very much alive," Curtis wrote.
"The audio of Mr Gibson... is the audio of millions of people all over this country."
Curtis added that she was eagerly awaiting the final match of the 2010 World Cup and the example it will set across the world, writing: "We will all get to see those beautiful young children holding the hands of the players as they walk them out onto the field of play and we will all weep as they unfurl the banner... 'Say no to racism'."
