Arcade Fire have pledged to donate one million Canadian dollars (£600,000) to a charity benefiting people who were affected by the Haitian earthquake, on the condition that the public give the same amount.

The band's co-founder Régine Chassagne helped launched the charity Kanpe, which promises to rebuild one Haitian village at a time.

The country was devastated by an earthquake exactly six months ago yesterday.

According to The New York Times, the group's frontman Win Butler said that Arcade Fire will match $1m worth of $5 (£3.20) donations from members of the public.

Chassagne, who has Haitian roots, is Kanpe's grand ambassador.
