The 58-year-old admitted to no longer enjoying the movies he was starring in, so he chose to have a career break instead.
He told The Mirror: "One reason is, I got bored. I felt I was repeating myself and wasn't having a lot of fun doing what I used to have fun doing."
However, Keaton was pleased when he was offered the voice of Ken in Toy Story 3.
He added: "I saw some Pixar movies like The Incredibles and thought, 'This is extraordinary. These are some of the best movies I've seen'. So when I got the opportunity to do this, obviously I said yes.
"So I was always selective to a fault and not doing things which maybe I should have done."
