Switzerland recently denied America's request to extradite the director in order to answer charges stemming from the 1970s case in which he pleaded guilty to having sex with an underage girl.
The director attended the Montreux Jazz Festival on Saturday to watch his wife Emmanuelle Seigner sing on stage, reports The AP.
US State Department spokesman Philip Crowley insisted that he would appeal Polanksi's case following Switzerland's decision. The 76-year-old faces an Interpol that is still in effect in 188 countries.
