The rapper, born Earl Simmons, filmed an interview expressing his feelings about the situation for MTV News before turning himself in to Los Angeles Metropolitan Court on Monday to begin a three-month term behind bars.
"What's going on today is that I'm going to turn myself in," he said.
"Me and my crew, we came to the conclusion that would be best. It was something that happened years ago, a driving in infraction."
He added that he believes the experience is pivotal to his future happiness.
"I like LA, I like the fans, I like to come out here to work. I wanna get that over with. It's one of the first steps in regaining everything I lost."
Simmons is expected to serve only part of his 90-day sentence in jail because of overcrowding.
