The average person spends at least £21,000 on music in their lifetime, a new survey from insurance firm Prudential has revealed.
The amount includes £895 on equipment and £425 per year on CDs, concerts and magazines.
Around 11% of the population are die-hard music enthusiasts, with an average lifetime spend of £44,000. This figure includes £1,432 for equipment and yearly spends of £550 on CDs, £291 on gigs and £46 on magazines.
Those at the other end of the appreciation scale still find themselves forking out £250 a year on music-related items.
Roger Ramsden, marketing director for Prudential, said: "Most people would describe themselves as a music fan of some sort or another, but what is really amazing is just how much money people find themselves spending on it."
