The 64-year-old actor told Scotland's Daily Record that his failed films and multiple 'Worst Actor' awards in the early 2000s made him certain that he would never find success in showbiz again.
"Ten years ago I was very depressed about my personal life and my career wasn't in any great shape either," he explained.
"I was also about to hit 50 and naturally you start to worry about how you age, how you look and what life has in store for you. But I went through that mid-life crisis, if you want to call it that, and today things are looking pretty good."
He added that he was also frustrated by his two divorces from actress Sasha Czack and former model Brigitte Nielsen.
"You never expect happiness after you've gone through a lot of suffering in your life. A lot of my romantic troubles in the past were my own fault because I was too naive and too trusting of certain women in my life. I was burned and burned badly. But I also learned a lot about women in the process, good and bad," he said.
"I think everything I went through had some kind of value in the sense of making me a better man, a man who can understand a woman's needs and no longer feel restrained or trapped in a long-term relationship."
Stallone recently joked that he will not allow his daughters to date until they are 45 years old.
