Celebrities celebrate Prop 8 ban

Celebrities have praised the decision to overturn California's Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage.

The measure, which was passed in 2008, was ruled unconstitutional on Wednesday by US District Chief Judge Vaughn R. Walker in San Francisco, reports People.

Portia de Rossi said: "I am ecstatic that proposition 8 has been overturned in the state of California. This is an incredibly exciting and historical day and a big step towards equal rights for all (sic)." Her partner Ellen DeGeneres added: "Equality won!"

Ricky Martin celebrated by Tweeting: "YEAHHHHH!!!!! PROP8UNCONSTITUTIONAL MOVING FORWARD!!!!!!!!" Kelly Osbourne wrote: "So happy over the news on prop8 its about time!"

Shanna Moakler announced: "Tonight we celebrate! EQUALITY and LOVE for all! This is so much bigger then marriage, it's about wisdom, compassion and knowing we CAN be heard, action DOES make a difference!"

Lance Bass said: "Congrats on the overturning of Prop 8!!!!" while Pink added, "It’s a good day!"

California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also extended his congratulations, saying: "This decision affirms the full legal protections and safeguards I believe everyone deserves."

Kim Kardashian further expressed her happiness at the news. "Prop 8 was struck down! This news is amazing!!!! Its about time! Congrats to everyone!" she wrote on her Twitter page.

Samantha Ronson dedicated a track to the occasion, writing: "Song Of The Day: Let's Get Married- Jagged Edge."

Supporters of Proposition 8 are expected to appeal the decision.
