Maurice Brighthaupt gave evidence in a trial to determine whether Smith's partner Howard K Stern conspired with doctors to illegally prescribe drugs to the reality star in the run up to her fatal overdose in 2007.
According to The AP, Brighthaupt said that he witnessed Stern feeding Smith pills at a time when she was too weak to take them herself and claimed the lawyer justified his actions by stating that she could "handle" the cocktail of pills and alcohol she received.
However, Brighthaupt did say that Smith was aware of the amount of drugs she was taking and consumed them of her own accord.
"I don't think he forced drugs on her," he said. "From what I know, it was her time to take medicine and he gave her medicine. I believe Anna made her own decisions."
Brighthaupt added that Smith was "a hurt lady" and increased her drug intake following the death of her son Daniel in 2006, but remained energetic and positive despite her dependency.
"She wasn't just sitting there popping pills," he clarified. "She was tired a lot. She would sleep a lot. But when she was up, she was a happy, fun-loving young lady who liked the attention and enjoyed her fans."
