David Beckham's England career may be over, according to manager Fabio Capello.

The Italian boss described the former captain as "too old" to have a significant role in the team's future plan.

"David is a fantastic player but I think we need new players for the future," said Capello in a press conference.

Beckham, 35, has previously insisted that he won't ever retire from England duty and that he wants to add to his 115 caps.

In a statement, his agent said: "For your information, there has been no discussion of retirement. He will always be available for his country, when fit and if needed he will be there."

The ex-Manchester United star missed out on playing in England's South Africa World Cup campaign due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Beckham, who is currently signed to Los Angeles Galaxy, may be given one final match by Capello to bid farewell to the national team's supporters.

"If he is fit, I hope we will play one more game here at Wembley so the fans can say goodbye," said the manager.
