The AFL player, who was rushed to hospital last month after overdosing on sleeping pills, has been arrested by police and banned from playing sport in the past because of his drug addiction.
Kim Ledger told the Herald Sun that he admired Cousins's bravery in speaking publicly about his problems and revealing the truth behind addictions in a new television documentary.
He said: "It's all a bit sad. But he is getting better. We are pretty proud of him for having a go and letting the world know that he has been to some pretty dark places. But he is trying very hard."
Heath Ledger died in 2008 from an accidental overdose of prescription drugs.
