CBBC presenter Holly Walsh had to be rescued at sea after she crashed awkwardly during a flying competition.

The annual Worthing International Birdman competition, which sees competitors dressed in a variety of costumes attempt to 'fly' the furthest off a pier, was stopped for around 20 minutes when Walsh injured herself upon impact with the water.

She was rescued by divers, strapped to a spinal board and taken to hospital with a suspected dislocated shoulder and fractured arm, reports PA.

Shoreham lifeboat spokesman Dave Cassan said: "It appears she entered the water wrong. It is thought she has a serious fracture above her elbow and a dislocated shoulder. The inshore lifeboat brought her to the shore at Worthing and she was transferred to hospital by ambulance."

Walsh, 30, attempted the jump with fellow fundraiser Joel Hicks in a makeshift helicopter marked with the words: 'Always With A Smile.'

"About to attempt to fly off Worthing Pier in a cardboard helicopter. This could be the most exhilarating / humiliating 15 secs of my life," Walsh had written on Twitter before the incident.

After the crash, she posted: "What an avo! Whilst escaping the clutches of a German baddy + being rescued by Rambo in his homemade chopper, I dislocated + broke my arm!"

Walsh recently spoke to DS about her internet-based club night Popcorn Comedy.
