Bristol Palin's former fiancé registered a letter of intent on Friday with the Alaska Public Offices Commission in order to officially begin his campaign to become Wasilla's mayor.
The AP reports that Johnston is seeking to follow in the footsteps of Bristol's mother Sarah, who also began her political career as mayor of the small town.
The 20-year-old spent considerable time in Los Angeles in 2009 in an effort to launch an acting career, but returned to Alaska earlier this year to attempt a reconciliation with Bristol.
The couple split again in July when rumours surfaced that Johnson had gotten another woman pregnant.
The mayoral candidate's run for office and scenes from his personal life will provide the basis for the upcoming reality show Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor's Office.
