Talking to BBC Newsbeat with writing partner Stephen Merchant, the Invention of Lying star revealed that he began acting out on the set of The Office and continues his bad behaviour to this day.
"[My and Stephen's] first job together we wrote and directed The Office. After a few hours it was clear that all I was trying to do was put off the other actors, that was my job," he explained.
"I was acting but I was gearing everything to make Martin Freeman laugh or Mackenzie Crook. And Steve came over and said, 'It's as if having your own TV show isn't enough for you'. And he's right. I get bored very quickly."
He continued: "I mean those were early days when I was a nobody - think what I'm like now."
Merchant added that working with Gervais is like having a young child.
"I'll tell you what making a film with Ricky's like, it's like you know when you go on a trip with young kids and you've got to keep them entertained all the time?" he said.
"They keep going, 'Are we there yet?' Then they need a wee at the most inopportune moment, you've got to pull over into a lay-by, then they don't like the sandwiches you've packed."
