Levi Johnston has reportedly said that he regrets apologising to Sarah Palin because it made him sound like a liar.

The aspiring politician - who is the father of Palin's young grandson - publicly apologised to the former Alaskan governor in July for remarks he had made about her family in the past.

However, according to The AP, he admitted during an upcoming interview with CBS's The Early Show to having second thoughts about the statement.

"I don't really regret anything, but the only thing I wish I wouldn't have done is put out that apology because it kind of makes me sound like a liar," he is quoted as saying.

"And I've never lied about anything. So that's probably the only thing. The rest of the stuff I can live with."

Johnston rose to fame during Palin's vice-presidential campaign in 2008 when it was announced that he and Palin's teenage daughter Bristol were engaged and expecting a baby. The couple split shortly after son Tripp was born in December 2008, and again earlier this month after a brief reconciliation.

The full interview - which was filmed yesterday - will air on The Early Show this morning.
