Taylor Swift has donated $100,000 (£64,400) to her hometown of Hendersonville, Tennessee.

The funds - which were originally alotted towards aiding those affected by recent floods in the area - will be used for building a new playground for the town's children as well as new volleyball courts.

Hendersonville spokesman Dave LeMarbre said: "It's overwhelming. We didn't expect that.

"We appreciate Taylor's donation as well as all the others who have stepped up."

The previous play area, called Kids Kingdom, is expected to be rebuilt in 2011 and cost close to $175,000 (£112,700), reports the Hendersonville Star-News.
