Patti: 'Matthew won't be happy with us'

Patti Newton has revealed that her son Matthew will not approve of her and her husband Bert talking to the media about his mental health issues.

The famous couple decided to give an exclusive interview to A Current Affair about Matthew's drug problem, behavioural issues and aggression after he allegedly attacked girlfriend Rachael Taylor in a Rome hotel.

Patti said: "He probably won't be that happy about [the interview]... but I actually instigated it. Bert has had a very long, good career over 60 years and I feel extremely sad that he might be remembered for the fact that Matthew caused so much trouble and heartache to everybody and I don't want that to be the case."

According to The Daily Telegraph, the Newton television interview drew more viewers than the premiere of The X Factor, which Matthew pulled out of hosting before checking into a psychiatric clinic.
