The 'Broken Strings' singer cancelled a gig in New York in order to fly home and attend tomorrow's funeral of Paul Catchpole, who was found collapsed in a street near his home in Rugby, Warwickshire.
In an official statement to the Daily Mail, a spokesperson for Morrison's record company said: "James is devastated. This came out of the blue."
Morrison, who previously said that he would contact his alcoholic father every week to "check if he's still alive", included the dedication "Dad, thanks for... keeping my feet on the ground," in his 2006 platinum-selling album Undiscovered.
