The Australian rugby player, who announced that he was gay towards the end of his career, said that Rice's sponsors should reconsider their endorsement of her after she made anti-gay comments on her Twitter page.
On Saturday night, after the Australian rugby team beat the South African Springboks, she tweeted: "Suck on that f*ggots."
Roberts later told the Herald Sun: "She is an idiot... and anyone who continues to endorse her as an athlete is an idiot as well. And I say that with a very sad tone in my voice. What a fool. And if her sponsors don't do something about it, they're fools as well."
Rice has now issued a statement saying: "I did not mean to cause offence and I apologise. I have deleted it from the site."
