Bono has been named Time magazine's Person of the Year, along with Bill and Melinda Gates.

Time editor Nancy Gibbs said all three were chosen for their good work in achieving political change and justice. The U2 man was heavily involved in the Live8 campaign in July.

"2005 is the year they turned the corner," said Gibbs. "When Bono charmed and bullied and morally blackmailed the leaders of the worlds richest countries into forgiving £27million in debt owed by the poorest."

The Gates couple were recognised for their huge donations to fighting disease in the third world. Gibbs explained: "They spent the year giving more money away faster than anyone ever has, including nearly half a billion dollars for the Grand Challenges, in which they asked the very best brains in the world how they would solve a huge problem, like inventing a vaccine that needs no needles and no refrigeration, if they had the money to do it."
