The New York State Division of Parole denied Mark David Chapman's release at a hearing yesterday.
The three commissioners on the panel reportedly told Chapman - who appeared via video link - that they were concerned about the "disregard" that he showed "for the norms of our society and the sanctity of human life".
They added that his "discretionary release remains inappropriate at this time and incompatible with the welfare of the community".
Chapman is serving a sentence of 20 years to life behind bars at Attica Correctional Facility for shooting Lennon outside his New York apartment building in 1980.
He is next eligible to apply for parole in August 2012.
