He died on Tuesday at his home in his native Birmingham, AL, reports E! Online.
Shadix was perhaps best known for playing Otho in Tim Burton's 1998 supernatural comedy Beetlejuice.
The cause of his death has not yet been reported. However, the actor's sister has said that he used a wheelchair and appeared to have hit his head after a fall.
Shadix, who was born William G. Scott, also appeared in Burton's Planet of the Apes update and contributed voice work to the director's animated film The Nightmare Before Christmas.
He further starred on Seinfeld, ER and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.
