An identity thief has been jailed for impersonating Will Smith and stealing thousands of dollars.
Carl Lomax, 45, had run up a debt of nearly $33,000 on credit cards that he had opened in the Independence Day star's name. He opened 14 credit accounts in Pittsburgh-area stores in the name of Willard C. Smith (Smith's legal name) before accruing the substantial debt.
Lomax was already on probation for stealing $81,000 by impersonating former Atlanta Hawks basketball player Steve Smith, and will now face a sentence of 30 months after pleading guilty. Judge Alan N. Bloch concluded during the trial that Lomax was "not amenable" to probation and ordered him to pay about $64,000, a sum that includes purchases Lomax made using Smith's name and that of a retired, unidentified pro football player.
