Speaking to Interview, the 40-year-old said that she felt grateful for the support of other high-profile models such as Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford and Helena Christensen, who were her "friends and comrades" when she entered the fashion industry.
Campbell said: "None of us ever cared about this word 'supermodel'... But what we did like was being together. We were very supportive of one another, my group of girls, and I don't think that happens so much nowadays.
"We were all doing shows in each country, working non-stop, but it didn't matter because we enjoyed being together. We would all have our rooms next to one another - it was like a dorm on tour... I'm happy that I got to be around such a great group of ladies."
Campbell also revealed that her fellow models banded together to ensure that she was included in shows in the early days of her career.
She said: "There were certain designers who hadn't used models of colour in their shows, and Christy and Linda said to them, 'If you don't take Naomi, then you don't get us'.
"My friends and comrades stuck up for me. That doesn't happen in fashion."
