The singer, who has publicly criticised Martin-Smith in the past, admitted that rejoining Take That has inspired him to forgive people for their past actions.
Speaking to The Sun, he said: "That's why it works now with me and Gaz [Gary Barlow]. Two grown-ups meet each other, take complete responsibility for their actions, apologise - that's magic.
"The whole thing - completely and utterly gone. It's incredibly freeing for your psyche. I don't want to hold any malice towards somebody from my past because that only hurts myself.
"All I want to do now is throw my arms around him and give him a hug. I want to hear sorry from him, I want to say I'm sorry.
"I wouldn't be doing anything if it weren't for Take That. I hated it so much, and now I can put a bow on it and love it.
"It's amazing turning something that harmed you into something positive. I get such a buzz about it - redemption and forgiveness."
