John McTiernan was sentenced to serve jail time following his conviction for lying to FBI agents and a federal judge in a wiretapping case.
McTiernan has also been ordered to pay a $100,000 (£63,147) fine.
The filmmaker will be allowed to post bond during his appeal process.
The charges stem from the examination of Hollywood private investigator Anthony Pellicano, who was found guilty on 76 counts related to wiretapping, racketeering and invasion of privacy.
McTiernan pleaded guilty to lying to FBI agents and the federal judge in July.
