According to the New York Post, an escalator that Willis, his publicist Paul Bloch and others were riding on at the Museum of Modern Art in New York abruptly sped up to "near-carnival ride speed".
"Women started screaming and one did a high-flying jump off, nearly landing on Bruce," a source added.
"We had to jump, it was going so fast," said Bloch.
No-one was injured and Willis continued to the MoMA screening of his new film Red with co-stars Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Mary Louise-Parker and Ernest Borgnine.
