The musician posted a video statement on YouTube in which she stated that her late husband overcame a rough upbringing to become a peace activist.
"[John] had a very painful childhood, but he managed to turn his pain around to give the world many beautiful songs and important messages which changed our heads and the way of our lives," she said.
Ono also thanked supporters for continuing to remember Lennon and urged them to "heal" one another.
She explained: "I know John wasn't expecting so much love to come from [fans], but he would have been very happy to know it. Thank you.
"May all of us learn to heal ourselves and learn to love each other in peace. I love you."
Ono previously remarked that the late Beatle would be "totally angry" with the state of today's society.
