In his new autobiography Late, Late at Night, the 'Jesse's Girl' hitmaker details a failed suicide attempt.
The '80s popstar wrote that he tried to hang himself at the age of 17 because he felt he was "as ugly as the ass end of a female baboon at mating season".
Springfield claims that he hung for about 20 seconds from a ceiling beam, but the noose undid itself.
"From this point on, music will become my salvation and save me from most serious self-inflicted harm," he wrote.
The book is out now from Simon & Schuster.
