Pop Eater reports that the 36-year-old actor is ready to have the procedure completed as he is not keen to have more children.
The star's wife Rebecca Romijn gave birth to twin daughters Dolly and Charlie two years ago.
He explained: "I thought it was going to be a lot easier than it actually was. I thought I'll just slap some diapers on, throw some food in them and that would be it. I thought it would be like one of our dogs.
"Will we have more? No, that's it. I took one of my dogs to the vet the other day and I was really considering going in and getting fixed myself."
O'Connell added: "My wife is very much into getting the gluten free and all of that. I'm the worst, I take them right to McDonald's and get them a Happy Meal, but they love it."
