In an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the 41-year-old revealed that she "didn't understand" the dynamic between herself and the late singer and found it difficult to cope with.
"I didn't understand my relationship with him," she explained.
"To some degree, he was a master at manipulating the media. I understand that nobody really knew who I was. They just assumed I was going along with something he would be doing... I understand it better now. The manipulation was a survival tactic for him."
Presley added that her attitude towards Jackson has changed since his death in 2009.
"[I've] come to have all this love again and understanding for him," she said.
"I don't know why it had to take all that to have this happen. That upsets me a bit."
