The singer gave up Sarah Streeter when he was 17 years old. Appearing on The Joy Behar Show, he said: "I was stone broke, I didn't have a pot to p*ss in."
He also explained that he made little effort to be part of her life as he did not want to "upset the apple cart". However, he made inroads in their relationship when her adoptive parents died.
He said: "We've tried to come together and be close. I never felt like I was her dad because I didn't take her to school, change her nappies, there was no paternal thing, but I'm trying."
Stewart's wife Penny Lancaster is currently pregnant with his eighth child.
