The popstar performed for Limbaugh and guests at the radio host's wedding last June in Palm Springs, Florida.
He received criticism for accepting the invitation to perform for Limbaugh, who is against gay marriage.
John said that he and his agent were a bit reluctant to take Limbaugh up on his invitation.
Speaking to the Telegraph, he said: "When [Limbaugh] asked me to play at his wedding, my agent said, 'Well, of course you won't be doing it.'"
John added: "But I said, 'Well, let me think about that first. Limbaugh's not anti-civil partnerships, so maybe I can have a dialogue about that. I've put my foot in the water and so has he.' I got on with him very well, got on very well with his wife."
John's partner David Furnish previously said that the singer has not ruled out a friendship with Limbaugh.
"I wasn't there, but from everything Elton told me, he said Rush and his bride were incredibly charming and welcoming. And they have said they want to come and have dinner with us in England, if they pass through in their travels," Furnish said.
