DS Icon: Dr Quincy, ME

Generally we don't like hospitals. They depress us and they smell funny. So when someone suggested that we have a doctor as a DS Icon, we almost laughed them out of town. However, Dr Quincy, ME, played by Jack Klugman for eight seasons on NBC, is no ordinary doctor. Part medical examiner, part wise-cracker, part detective and part slick womanizer, Quince made daytime TV cool, sexy and exciting. Aired in the UK in the classic post-Neighbours/Doctors afternoon slot, Quincy more than stood his own among the competitive daytime detective market alongside Murder She Wrote's Jessica Fletcher and Diagnosis Murder's Dr Mark Sloan. If for nothing else, the show should be credited for the way it managed to shoe-horn social debates and issues into bizarre murder investigations. Punk music, airline safety, drink driving and plastic surgery were some of the diverse issues and moral quandaries covered on the show.
The famous opening Quincy, ME title sequences summed up the spirit of the show, featuring the legendary title character apparently examining a corpse at work. Only seconds later the camera pans out to reveal that the cheeky medical professional is actually taking a close peek at a scantily-clad lady. Classic Quince, always the scamp. When he wasn't chasing tail, Quince could usually be found shouting at his boss, arguing with the police or in a dispute with LAPD Homicide about how something "just wasn't right" and that he "needed more time". Of course, Quincy always won the battle and solved the case in the end (with more than a little help from his colleague Sam, who frankly did most of the donkey-work).
