Blur bassist Alex James has been awarded an honorary degree from the University of Bournemouth.

The musician and journalist, who was born locally, will be made an honorary doctor of arts during a graduation ceremony on November 5. James will attend the event along with hundreds of students.

Speaking to the BBC, Professor John Vinney said: "Alex James has achieved a great deal of success through his music, his writing, his media work and his entrepreneurial activities."

James penned autobiography Bit of a Blur in 2007 and has written for The Independent, The Observer, The Times, Q magazine and The Idler. He has also produced award-winning cheeses from his farm in Oxfordshire.

The ceremony will take place at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC).
