The Formula 1 champion was being driven through Sao Paulo when a gang brandishing guns tried to ambush the vehicle.
Button's driver, trained in emergency avoidance techniques, managed to force past traffic and drive to safety, the Sunday Mirror reports.
Speaking of the attack, Button said: "I was terrified. I saw a man with a truncheon and a pistol. I didn't know what was going to happen. The driver just floored it. We must have hit five cars but we got out of there. He was a legend."
Button was travelling in the specially armoured car with his father, manager, trainer and an armed guard when the attack took place. He is in the country ahead of today's Grand Prix.
