In an interview with Matt Lauer for NBC's Today Show, Dina suggested that the Mean Girls actress is actively working on improving her life choices while she seeks treatment at California's Betty Ford Centre.
"It [rehabilitation] was life changing… The Betty Ford Centre is an amazing place," she said. "She's just a different person."
Dina continued: "She's been in a couple of facilities, but this one, to me, has really changed her… Being so young can only help her sobriety in the future."
The star's mother admitted that Lindsay had to come to terms with the idea that she is an addict.
"As a mother it wasn’t for me to come and tell the world about her problem... I wasn’t in denial. It was for her to come to her evolution. As a mother we protect. Now I’m happy and relieved myself... We take it one day at a time.
"Addiction is difficult… She's so public that I think we can only be positive and look to the future to help other families."
Dina also refused to comment on whether Lindsay reunited with father Michael at the Rancho Mirage treatment facility this past weekend.
Lindsay has been ordered to stay in a treatment facility until January 3, 2011.
