Al Lewis, who played Grandpa Munster in 60s comedy The Munsters, has died at the age of 82.

The actor died on Friday, with his death being announced by New York radio station WBAI-FM, where Lewis hosted a weekly show. Programme director Bernard White called Lewis "generous, cantankerous [and] engaging," adding: "To say that we will miss [him]...is a profound understatement."

Lewis gained fame as Grandpa Munster in the 1960s US sitcom, but also performed in a number of films, including They Shoot Horses, Don't They? and Married to the Mob.

As well as acting, Lewis worked as a talent scout, ran a restaurant, wrote books and campaigned as the Green Party candidate for the governorship of New York.

Lewis suffered complications during an operation in 2003, leading to an emergency bypass and the eventual amputation of his right leg below the knee. He is survived by his wife Karen, as well as three sons and four grandchildren.
