The rocker told BBC News that he's had to shelve a new PiL album in order to comfort his spouse Nora in her time of mourning.
"We were going to go into the studio but in light of my step-daughter's death, I really can't be doing that at the moment," he said. "I don't want to leave my wife alone for any length of time right now. So the music side has had to be held."
Lydon praised his Public Image Ltd bandmates for understanding that he cannot undertake recording a new LP at this time.
He explained: "They all knew her anyway. So it's a good thing that we've taken a breather. It would have been impossible and would have affected the outcome of the record."
PiL reunited for the first time in close to two decades for five UK shows last winter and most recently headlined the Heineken Music Conference 2010 Festival in Tel Aviv in August.
