Pete Doherty has escaped jail for his admission of heroin possession and is being forced to undergo an extensive drug rehabilitation programme.

The Babyshambles frontman has been in custody since January 26 after plain clothes officers arrested him for possessing a wrap of white powder.

In his sentencing at Ealing Magistrates Court this afternoon, Doherty was given a twelve-month community order and instructed to undergo the rehab programme. As part of the programme, he will be required to give monthly samples and, if he tests positive for drugs, could face a jail term.

"He's not proud of his dealings and at no point would he ever seek to glamourise it," Babyshambles bassist Drew McConnell told Sky News. "He's an advert for not taking drugs basically."

Drummer Adam Fleck added: "It'll be difficult but we'll be behind him ... with whatever resources he needs, we can give him. So it's a challenging time ahead but I think we can get through it."
