Maid who stole from stars faces jail

The maid who stole from employer Robert De Niro's wife and other celebrities faces a jail term.

Lucyna Turyk-Wawrynowicz admitted taking clothes, jewellery and credit cards from various New York houses.

The 35-year-old's thefts included a pair of earrings worth $95,500 (£53,000) from De Niro's wife Grace Hightower. Her other victims were actress Candice Bergen and socialite Renee Rockefeller.

Turyk-Wawrynowicz's plea deal also included admitting forgery and identity theft and accepting a jail term of 1-3 years.

The Polish maid claimed she took from Hightower because she was a bad employer. "If she treated me better, with more respect, I probably wouldn't have done this," she told police after her arrest. "I didn't steal from Isabella Rossellini because she treated me well."

She was found to be in the US illegally, so may be deported after serving her sentence, which will be decided on February 21.
