According to the New York Times, Wainwright wrote the opera, titled Prima Donna, to play at New York's Metropolitan Opera.
However, the Met declined to host the show because Wainwright insisted that the libretto remain in French.
On Monday, the New York City Opera offered to produce the show at the Lincoln Centre Theater. The Met and Lincoln commissioned the piece together.
The opera, about a retired soprano, played in various UK venues last year as well as the Luminato Festival in Toronto.
