The author and wife of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards died on Tuesday at her Chapel Hill, North Carolina home after a lengthy battle with cancer, reports Reuters.
"Today we have lost the comfort of Elizabeth's presence but she remains the heart of this family. We love her and will never know anyone more inspiring or full of life," her family said in a statement.
Edwards was originally diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 before going into remission for three years until 2007, when the cancer spread to several other parts of her body.
