Kerry Katona has admitted that her controversial interview on This Morning in 2008 was a turning point for her.

The 30-year-old was heavily criticised following her interview with Phillip Schofield and Fern Britton, during which she appeared to slur her words due to the medication she was on.

Making her return to the show earlier today, she told Schofield and Holly Willoughby: "That wasn't me back then. I was in a very dark, dark place."

She admitted that she had been on "heavy medication" and had been in an "unhappy marriage", but confessed that she was too "embarrassed and ashamed" to watch the full recording back.

"It's mortifying," she said. "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people around me. I've moved away. I wasn't a good person then. And it's hard to watch it back, it's hard, oh my God [to think that] my kids are going to have to watch this when they grow up."

She continued: "Luckily for This Morning - I did watch a clip of it back, I didn't watch it all - I came off my medication. I said to my husband at the time, 'This isn't right.' I felt suicidal on it and if it wasn't for This Morning... I actually weaned myself off it without going to the doctors."

Katona admitted that she should not have done the interview at the time but acknowledge that it, along with a report in the News of the World had helped her realise the change she needed to make.

"It's all changed me," she said. "It gave me a massive wake up call to go, 'Come on Kerry, you're a mum.'"
