Naomi Foner was nominated in 1989 as Best Screenwriter for Running on Empty, but lost out on the night.
The Brokeback Mountain star was nine at the time, and recalled watching her on TV at the Golden Globes and Academy Awards.
"I was watching The Globes clutching a pillow until mum's name was called as the winner," he said. "When the Academy Awards came around, I clutched the same pillow, but when her name wasn't called, I threw it across the floor."
Now he has won his own nomination, he has offered Foner his complementary sweatshirt.
