Edwards passed away on Thursday at the age of 88.
Derek co-starred with Dudley Moore and Edwards’s wife Julie Andrews in the filmmaker’s 1979 romantic comedy 10.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she called Edwards "a genius in the entertainment world".
Derek said that Edwards was a "loyal man" who "spoiled her" by giving her her first big break in the movie business.
"He brought out the best in me. And I'm not alone in that book," she added. "It’s the saddest news."
