Anne Hathaway has surprised a New York school by inviting them to join her on the red carpet and on stage for next year's Oscars.

The actress visited Staten Island's Public School 22 after their Christmas concert to ask them to perform alongside her at the ceremony.

The New York Daily News reports that choral director Gregg Breinberg told the children: "Chorus, you may want to sit down because this is going to be nuts."

The star then appeared to invite the excited classmates to Los Angeles, adding: "I just have to say I've been watching the PS 22 choir on YouTube for I guess about two years now. You guys have brought such joy to my heart."

Hathaway will host the 83rd Academy Awards alongside James Franco.
