Robert De Niro has insisted that he has always tried to avoid the media scrutiny that often comes with celebrity.

The two-time Oscar winner told USA Today that he has never been interested in attracting media attention.

"I've never been one of those actors who has touted myself as a fascinating human being," he said.

The star added: "I had to decide early on whether I was to be an actor or a personality."

De Niro, who plays a grumpy grandfather in the upcoming Little Fockers, also suggested that he has a better relationship with his own real-life family than his character does in director Paul Weitz's comedy.

He explained: "I have a pretty good relationship... the in-laws, my son's wife and her father."

Little Fockers is released on December 22 in US cinemas.
