Speaking to Parade, the actress explained that she tries not to put pressure on herself to ring in the New Year in a traditional fashion.
"I feel like there's so much pressure at midnight to like be like, 'Woo-hoo'! And then, when that second or minute is over, you're disappointed," she said.
McCarthy further noted that she considers reflection to be a key element of her holiday observance.
She remarked: "So in the last few years, four minutes before midnight, I go in a different room where there isn't a clock or anything. I just take a friend, or my boyfriend at the time, and we just sit and talk about how great things are and what we're looking forward to. It's much more meaningful to me."
This year, McCarthy will serve as a co-host for ABC's Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve With Ryan Seacrest 2011 telecast.
